Statement by Medicare Rights Center President Joe Baker on the Release of the Fiscal Commission Co-Chairs’ Proposal
New York, NY—There is much to digest in the Fiscal Commission Chairmen’s proposal released this week and many unanswered questions about the details. We have serious concerns about proposals that would directly affect the out-of-pocket costs for people with Medicare, half of whom live at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The chairmen’s proposal seems to appropriately credit the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with making important progress on fiscal constraints in and sustainability of the Medicare program, but additional modifications need to be carefully examined to prevent onerous changes that would adversely affect Medicare consumers’ quality of life.
