Statement of Medicare Rights Center President Joe Baker on President Obama’s State of the Union Speech
New York, NY—Tonight reminds us to think about our future, and at some point in the future, most of us will have Medicare. As the President noted, there are improvements to Medicare in the health reform law that we will all benefit from, whether you have Medicare now or years from now, such as the closure of the doughnut hole in the Medicare drug benefit.
But there is much more to the law. Through various reforms to Medicare, the health reform law helps to extend the Medicare trust fund by 12 years, and it could help control costs even more significantly if implemented correctly. Additionally, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the Affordable Care Act will actually reduce the federal deficit over ten years. We should let these reforms already in place take hold, and work together on responsible approaches to contain spending that do not come at the expense of the public good.
